You, Making an impression at your registration interview in 8 easy steps

Wednesday, June 26th, 2019

  1. Remember this is your only chance to make a great first impression. If you show us that you are a serious candidate, then we can tell potential employers that you’re the person for the job, but this needs to be what we’ve experienced of you for ourselves.
  2. Dress appropriately for the interview, whether this is in person or by video. You don’t need to splash out on a new expensive wardrobe, but we appreciate professionalism and you making the effort to dress smartly goes a long way. In the past, we have interviewed people in their pyjamas. Needless to say, we didn’t find a place for them.
  3. We understand that not everyone can find the time to interview in person and we offer registration interviews over webcam. However, this doesn’t mean we take the interview any less seriously and neither should you. No matter how the interview is being carried out, please treat it with the same level of importance.
  4. If you are doing a video interview make sure you are in a quiet place with good Wi Fi so it’s easy to connect in plenty of time for your interview, as well as being in a good enough environment that you can communicate clearly and effectively.
    • Don’t have your interview in a place with lots of distractions (i.e. children or pets), as you need to give the interview your fullest
    • Similarly, don’t have a registration interview whilst at work, as the current employer will be paying for your time, while you are having an interview for another job. Doing this never makes the applicant look good.
  5. Make sure you are at your interview on time and allow enough time for the interview, so you aren’t under time pressure and you start the interview on the best possible foot.
  6. Make sure you have a copy of your CV with you, preferably in print, so you are prepared to answer any questions you get and can make sure that you have reasons to explain any gaps in your CV.
  7. It’s not a problem if you, the candidate, changes your mind or realises they will not be able to attend an interview, for whatever reason, as that is your prerogative to do. However please give us, the recruiter, the consideration of letting us know that you won’t be attending, as this is basic good manners and common courtesy. We will also be far more willing to reschedule your interview if you do.
    • Always bear in mind that a good recruiter or agency will keep a record of all candidates booked in for interview and will log any people who don’t turn up (“no shows”), so if as a candidate, you don’t bother to cancel it beforehand, it would deem you to be too unreliable and unprofessional to be put forward for any future jobs that may come up.
    • Remember that if an applicant decides to not turn up for their registration interview, they effectively deprive another potential candidate, which might be you, from taking up that slot.
  8. Remember that we who work in recruitment are here to do our best to support you, the candidate in finding a job and we are only trying to help you. We are on your side and if you work with us and show that you understand and respect that in this process we are a team, then we will do our utmost to help you find the job that fits for you!
